Lancey Foux is a cornerstone of the UK scene. His new single ‘BIG SWAG’ featuring 24KGoldn is an effortless addition to his arsenal of psychedelic trap bangers.
Lancey weaves his languid vocals between the spacey, layered beat, adlibs and reverbs outlining his cadence like the peripheral hallucinations of an acid trip. His lyrics are airy but hint at his independence being his only source of security when exposed to external stresses – “Had to stay in my own world, just to save my life”.
American rapper 24kGoldn adds a pretty scorching verse, coolly easing into an ABAB rhyme scheme. His expression turns to an impassioned and melodic cry for the last few bars, emulating emo trap artist like Lil Uzi. It’s a reminder that, whilst the saturated US trap scene offers established tropes to newer artists like ladder rungs, there’s still an expectation for the prominent pioneers of the UK trap sound like Lancey to stay ahead of the curve as the scene grows in their wake.
Lancey dropped an album back in March, FIRST DEGREE, which was raw, aggressive, and minimalist. It will be interesting to see where he takes his sound with future releases and whether this single is a sign of a more material to come this year.
